The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Change, change, change...that really would be the word that describes my life right now. Everything is on the cusp of changing. I'm starting my new job soon, Loss Prevention at Nordstrom, I'm moving into my first, real, big girl apartment, I am permanently going to be living in Minneapolis. The times are a changin'. And while these are huge, exciting things to rejoice, all I can think about is wanting to slow down, stop even. I want to freeze this time for a little bit and relish in what I've taken for granted the last three years.
You see, I hate change. I always have. If I could avoid literally all change I think I would. Not that all change is bad, and not that I don't change, in fact I have. I can tell you I am not at all the same person I was when I entered Northwestern. I've learned that avocados really are good, that I can order something other than a sausage, mushroom and cheese omelet at Midtown. I've learned the art of eating food not in a specific order. but all together, and I now like peppers (though only cooked). I can see that change is good, even necessary, but at a time of year filled with goodbyes all I want is to pull the breaks.
It's spring, which brings about the goodbyes of graduation. Not something that I particularly cared about before, but as a junior, when most of my classes are filled with seniors, ones who have become my friends I have goodbyes. Leaving American Eagle (I'm not quiting right away, I'll still work a little in the summer) I have the goodbye to not only the people I work with and love but to a company that has opened me up to a world and a career I never thought possible. On top of that I'm entering my senior year, which will be full of goodbyes as well.
Change can be painful. But that reason? Because what comes after is unknown. While in the period of before the change you're comfortable, you know what to expect, there are no surprises. It's easy there. Jumping into the unknown is scary. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? What if I don't make friends? While we all see the absurdity of these thoughts, we all have them. The comforting thing though, this is where God is able to show off. When we are at our worst, God is at his best. When we trust him, and go where he leads, he will equip us. When we step into that unknown he is right there holding our hand and whispering encouragement in our ears "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plan to give you a hope and a future."
As I'm entering into these seasons I dread so much, as I'm starting a new chapter in my life, that is what I'm clinging to. The fact that my heavenly father is walking this journey with me. As I slowly make these changes, as I slowly adjust to what is unknown and uncertain God patiently waits for me and whispers encouragement to continue to trust in him, because he created me after all, he knows what's best for me.
